Purdue Football vs Indiana State

In the warmest night game kickoff at Ross-Ade Stadium, the Purdue Boilermaker football team finally gets a win, breaking a streak that had lasted 363 days. They started out slow against the Indiana State Sycamores, but took over in the 3rd quarter and coasted to the win, 44-19. 

It didn't look like a rout early. Indiana State, an FCS program that had never beaten Purdue in eight tries, hung around into the second quarter, matching the Boilermakers field goal for field goal while Purdue's offense stalled out three separate times inside the 25-yard line. Freshman kicker Jacobo Echeverria Lozano bailed out each stall, going a perfect 3 of 3 on the night — from 39, 25 and 23 yards — and Purdue carried a modest 16-6 edge into the locker room. Ryan Browne, the Boilermaker quarterback, admitted afterward that the sluggish start was something the team could not afford going forward telling reporters, "Purdue can not beat Purdue."

At the half Odom said he didn't have to talk to the team as the Captains took control in the locker room. Whatever was stated was clearly taken to heart. Purdue's defense forced consecutive Indiana State punts to open the third quarter, and the offense answered by scoring touchdowns on three straight possessions — a stretch that turned a competitive game into a laugher in barely eleven minutes of game clock. Fame Ijeboi, a transfer from Minnesota making his Boilermaker debut, capped a five-play, 62-yard march with a 1-yard touchdown plunge, part of a night in which he finished with 87 yards on 11 carries and nearly had more; an earlier long touchdown run was wiped out by a holding penalty. Three plays and 48 seconds later, Browne found Tra'Mar Harris for a 7-yard score off a drive kick-started by a 22-yard Ijeboi catch-and-run. Then, with 21 seconds left in the quarter, Browne capped an 80-yard drive by hitting Asaad Waseem for an 18-yard touchdown, the receiver's third — and biggest — connection of an efficient evening. By the time the third quarter ended, Purdue led 37-6, and the game Odom had called for a fast start to had instead been decided by a ferocious finish to the first half of it.

Browne was the engine throughout. The junior completed 23 of 29 passes for a career-high 317 yards — topping the 311 he threw for a year earlier — with three touchdowns and no interceptions, spreading the ball to eleven different receivers. Waseem, a transfer from Florida Atlantic playing his first game in a Purdue uniform, led all of them with six catches for 107 yards, praising his quarterback's accuracy after the game. Odom, for his part, credited his second-year starter with reading the defense correctly and putting his playmakers in position to succeed.

If the third quarter was the turning point, the fourth quarter dagger came twelve seconds into it. Indiana State backup quarterback Brady Allen, thrown into relief duty, had his first pass of the period picked off by Don Saunders, who returned it 35 yards for a touchdown and a 44-6 lead. It was Saunders' first game in a Purdue uniform, and he called it a case of simply doing his job and breaking on the ball at the right moment. From there, Indiana State finally found some rhythm through the air — Allen finished 3 of 5 for 117 yards and a touchdown in the fourth quarter alone, including a 45-yard strike to Jayden Reed — but the two late Sycamore touchdowns only dressed up a final score that had been decided an hour earlier.

Indiana State starter Elijah Owens, who missed much of last season with a collarbone injury, went 9 of 17 for 101 yards before giving way to Allen, and the Sycamores finished with 284 total yards against Purdue's 523. The Boilermakers converted 6 of 11 third downs to Indiana State's 4 of 12, and out-rushed the Sycamores 177 yards to 66, even while committing nine penalties for 85 yards of their own. Purdue's lone giveaway of the night was an early-game fumble Indiana State managed to recover itself, meaning the Boilermakers played the entire game without turning the ball over even once.

For Odom, the result mattered less as a statement than as a reset. It was less about Indiana State's overmatched roster than about proving the Boilermakers could finally put a complete game together. They'll get a quick chance to build on it, hosting Wake Forest next before Big Ten play begins in earnest.
